⚖️Enforced disappearance, once associated with oppressive regimes, now occurs in internal conflicts, used to silence opponents. On #DayOfTheDisappeared, we remember those who vanished, especially Human Rights Defenders.
🇱🇦In Laos, enforced disappearance is a troubling tactic used by the authorities to suppress activists. Laos is notorious for cracking down on dissent through threats, arrests, and even torture! High-profile cases like:
🚨Sombath Somphone’s abduction in 2012 remains unsolved.
🚨Od Sayavong, a vocal activist, has been missing since August 2019.
🚨Chinese rights lawyer Lu Siwei’s arrest in Laos i. July 2023 raises international concern.
The families of the disappeared bear a heavy burden, highlighting that enforced disappearances harm entire communities. We stand in solidarity with them, demanding justice and answers.
✊At Manushya Foundation, we call upon the Lao government to further its commitment to the ICPPED, a crucial framework for safeguarding individuals from enforced disappearance, which it has signed but is yet to ratify.
🌏The international community, too, holds a responsibility to pressure the Lao government to take meaningful action to ensure justice and accountability.
🗣️Silence is not an option! Sombath, Od and Lu’s families DESERVE to know the truth!
